About the Geonics EM31-MK2
The EM31-MK2 is a frequency-domain electromagnetic terrain conductivity meter carried as a single rigid boom by one operator, with the transmitter and receiver coils fixed at each end. It measures apparent ground conductivity (in millisiemens per metre) and the in-phase component, which is sensitive to near-surface metallic objects and magnetic susceptibility, simultaneously and continuously as the operator walks a survey line.
Its fixed 3.7 m coil spacing gives it an effective exploration depth of roughly 6 m in the vertical dipole orientation and roughly 3 m in the horizontal orientation, placing it between the shallower EM38 and the deeper, two-person EM34-3 in the Geonics conductivity-meter family. It is widely used for reconnaissance mapping of soil and groundwater conditions, contamination plumes, and buried utility corridors.
