Hand Tools & Gauges
Calipers, micrometers, height gauges, dial and digital indicators, gauge blocks, and thread/bore gauges from Mitutoyo, Tesa, Mahr, Starrett, Trimos, and Helios Preisser. New, Refurbished, Absolute Certified, or Surplus — the everyday toolkit of the QC department and machine shop.
What Are Precision Hand Tools & Gauges?
Precision hand tools are the direct-reading instruments used for the vast majority of everyday dimensional checks — at incoming inspection, on the shop floor, and in the QC lab. Unlike CMMs and vision systems, they typically measure one dimension at a time, are operated by hand, and give an immediate reading without a full measurement program. Their accuracy depends heavily on correct technique (contact force, alignment, thermal stabilization) as much as on the instrument itself, which is why calibration and operator training matter just as much as the tool's nominal specification.
Hand Tools We Supply
Calipers
- Vernier calipers: Mechanical vernier scale reading, no battery required, robust for harsh shop environments.
- Dial calipers: Rack-and-pinion mechanism driving an analog dial — fast visual reading, immune to battery failure.
- Digital calipers: Electronic linear encoder with digital readout, often with data output (SPC/USB) for statistical process control logging.
Micrometers
- Outside micrometers: For external diameters and thicknesses, typically 0–25 mm per frame size, in mechanical or digital readout versions.
- Inside micrometers: Bore and internal-diameter measurement, using either a caliper-type head or extension rods.
- Depth micrometers: For slot, step, and hole-depth measurement with interchangeable rods.
Height & Depth Gauges, Indicators
- Height gauges: Vertical reference column with a scriber or probe for layout marking and height measurement off a surface plate (Trimos, Tesa, Mitutoyo).
- Dial and digital indicators: Comparative measurement against a set reference, used in fixtures, gauging setups, and on granite comparator stands.
Gauge Blocks & Fixed Gauges
- Gauge blocks (slip gauges): Precision-ground reference length standards, individually or in sets, used to calibrate other instruments or set comparators (Grade 0/1/2/K per ISO 3650).
- Thread and bore/plug gauges: Go/no-go functional gauges for fast conformance checks of threads and hole diameters.
Accuracy & Specification Considerations
Resolution (the smallest displayed increment, e.g. 0.01 mm on a caliper) is not the same as accuracy — the actual permissible error over the measuring range (per ISO 13385 for calipers, ISO 3611 for micrometers) is what determines whether the tool is fit for a given tolerance. As a rule of thumb, an instrument's accuracy should be roughly 4–10× tighter than the tolerance being checked (a "gauge capability" or Cg/Cgk consideration). Contact pressure, squareness of application, and thermal expansion (parts and gauges both grow with temperature) all materially affect real-world readings, especially on tight tolerances.

Condition Tiers for Hand Tools & Gauges
Factory New
Sealed-in-box tools with full manufacturer warranty and factory calibration certificate — ideal when auditors require unbroken traceability from purchase.
Refurbished
Cleaned, measuring faces and anvils inspected for wear, mechanisms lubricated and adjusted, batteries/displays replaced on digital tools, function-tested.
Absolute Certified
Verified against traceable gauge blocks across the full measuring range per ISO 13385/3611, with a calibration certificate and uncertainty statement issued.
Surplus / As-Is
Decommissioned or excess stock sold as-is — good for non-critical shop use, training tools, or spares, at the lowest acquisition cost.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should calipers and micrometers be recalibrated?
There is no universal answer — it depends on usage intensity, criticality of the tolerances checked, and your quality system requirements (ISO 9001, IATF 16949, AS9100 auditors typically expect a documented interval, commonly 6 or 12 months). High-use shop-floor tools in harsh environments often warrant more frequent checks than lab-stored reference tools. We can advise an appropriate interval and supply the tool already on our Absolute Certified tier with a fresh certificate as a starting point.
What's the practical accuracy difference between a vernier, dial, and digital caliper?
All three, when new and in good condition, meet the same ISO 13385 accuracy class for a given size range — the mechanism (vernier scale, dial, or digital encoder) affects reading speed, ease of use, and susceptibility to wear or battery failure, not the underlying mechanical accuracy. Digital calipers add the convenience of SPC data output; vernier calipers have no battery to fail; dial calipers offer fast visual reading. Choose based on environment and workflow rather than assuming digital is inherently "more accurate."
Can I get calibration certificates traceable to national standards?
Yes — every instrument on our Absolute Certified tier is recalibrated against gauge blocks and reference standards with documented traceability, and we issue a calibration certificate with measured values and uncertainty. Ask us if you need ISO 17025-accredited certification specifically, which we can arrange through our accredited calibration lab partners.
