About the Scintrex SM-5 NAVMAG
The SM-5 NAVMAG is a cesium-vapor magnetometer from Scintrex's earlier SM-series airborne magnetics line, sharing its underlying sensor technology with the SM-4/SM-4G SmartMag but packaged for installation as an airborne survey sensor rather than a hand-carried walking instrument. As with Scintrex's other cesium instruments, it measures the scalar magnitude of the total magnetic field using cesium-atom resonance, giving low noise and continuous readings suited to the higher speed and vibration environment of an aircraft-mounted sensor.
It predates Scintrex's current CS-series sensors (CS-3, CS-L, CS-VL), which now cover the same airborne and towed-array role. PartnerGeometrics sources working SM-5 NAVMAG units from the used equipment market for buyers maintaining legacy survey systems or needing a lower-cost airborne sensor.
