Scintrex SM-4/SM-4G SmartMag
A high-sensitivity, high-resolution cesium vapor magnetometer, with the SM-4G variant configurable as a gradiometer — a predecessor of Scintrex's current CS-series cesium sensors.
This model has been discontinued by the manufacturer. PartnerGeometrics sources it through the used and refurbished market — available as Refurbished, Absolute Certified, or Surplus only.

About the Scintrex SM-4/SM-4G SmartMag
The SmartMag was Scintrex's high-sensitivity cesium-vapor magnetometer line before the current CS-series sensors. It is a true WALKMAG-type instrument, giving near-continuous total-field readings rather than the slower discrete-cycle sampling of proton precession instruments, which made it well suited to walking and vehicle-towed ground surveys covering large areas at a steady pace. The SM-4G variant adds a second sensor for optional gradiometer operation.
Like Scintrex's other cesium-vapor sensors, it measures the scalar amplitude of the magnetic field using the properties of cesium atoms rather than the nuclear precession used in proton magnetometers, giving finer resolution for detecting weak or subtle anomalies. It has been superseded by the CS-3 and related CS-series sensors; PartnerGeometrics sources working SM-4/SM-4G units from the used equipment market.
