About the Mitutoyo Surftest 301
The Surftest 301 is a benchtop-style surface roughness tester from Mitutoyo's original Surftest series, predating the current SJ handheld line. It uses a drive unit and stylus detector to trace Ra/Rz roughness profiles on machined and ground surfaces.
Widely used in QC labs and machine shops for its era, the Surftest 301 remains a common find in the calibration and used-equipment market, and can still be serviced and recalibrated for continued shop-floor use.
