About the Geonics EM61-MK1
The EM61-MK1 is a time-domain electromagnetic (TDEM) system mounted on a wheeled, non-metallic cart, using a transmitter coil to induce eddy currents in nearby conductive metal and a receiver coil to detect the decaying secondary field once the transmitter pulse ends. Because the receiver only "listens" after the primary field has switched off, EM61 systems are highly sensitive to compact metallic targets — buried drums, ordnance, and utility pipes — while remaining relatively insensitive to the broad, low-conductivity ground response that complicates frequency-domain instruments in similar applications.
The EM61-MK1 established this cart-mounted TDEM format; the current EM61-MK2 carries the same basic transmitter/receiver coil geometry forward with refined digital electronics. MK1 units remain functional survey tools and continue to be sourced through the used-equipment market for UXO screening, landfill/debris mapping, and utility locating.
